There’s no denying that self-care has become one of the trendiest words of the year. Agreed, we’ve also jumped on the wagon because, well, self-care feels good. That doesn’t mean though that it consists of filling your home with bathbombs, candles, chocolate bars and flowers just to be a part of the #selfcare girlgang. So, we’ve come up with five ways that you, busy as you may be, can schedule in that self-care as a creative entrepreneur, without the fluff and the hefty price tags.
Thinking about that third coffee already? We get it, the caffeine is addictive, but your body deserves better than that! By drinking more water, you’ll feel a significant improvement in your energy levels. Less crash and more balance means better creativity flow. Plus, you’ll have a better night’s sleep and that, my friend, is the ultimate goal.
We can’t stress this one enough. It’s actually no miracle that some of creative’s best ideas come in the shower. Why? Because the warmth and environment calms your brain into a state of alpha waves. These in turn, get your subconscious mind to pop out some of your best ideas. If you’re in the mood, then sing out some of your favourite affirmations and visualize yourself crushing it in your creative element. Bonus points; cuddle up with your fur baby and take a quick nap to really refuel.
Go on a complaint cleanse for a whole day – nothing fancy, just letting go of negative thoughts as they cross your mind. This goes hand in hand with the comparison guilt-trip we give ourselves on the daily. Just don’t go there. Your mind will thank you for being your happiest self today. New neural pathways will be formed – yep, your brain is a muscle that needs to work in order to grow – and with this new optimistic workout, your positive thoughts will become easier and easier.
Technology has us by the metaphorical balls. (Pardon our French!) With the constant bombardment of notifications and emails coming through, it’s no wonder that our brains can’t function. Giving yourself time to unplug is vital in getting a fresh sense of perspective. Pick a time of day, whether that is during your breakfast, your lunch hour or the last hour before bed and stick to committing a tech-free time slot. You’ll eventually get over the constant need to have your hand glued to your phone, we promise.
Don’t feel like you have to be the Wonder Woman to everyone’s beck and
call DM. You can’t pour from an empty cup, right? So setting aside your Friday nights for a good soak in the bath and a book doesn’t make you boring. It feeds your soul, so don’t be afraid to say “no” to invites and every networking event out there. You’ll turn that FOMO into JOMO – the joy of missing out in no time.
If none of these really resonate with you, maybe turn on the diffuser with some lavender essential oils, take a minute to meditate, get into a good yoga flow, or go for a run. The list can go on, but we don’t want to take all of your me-time and turn it into a scroll-fest.
